In the world of writing, there are many things we must consider. What seems like a simple thing to most can be the biggest tool of our job. So for this post, I want to share with you the most used tool in the world of writing. The keyboard!!
As one of the most used tools, it is also one of the most replaced. Because it is how we get our work done we have to make sure it is functioning properly. There are also other factors that we have to take into consideration. Let’s chat about some of these, shall we?
First, we have to have comfort!
I am one of those old-school people and I love my pen and paper. I prefer books rather than digital copies and wooden pencils line my pencil cup. Even though I prefer the old-school method of reading and writing I cannot escape the use of technology. When my keyboard started going through batteries every other day I knew it was time to find a replacement.
It is important to have the right keyboard for your specific writing needs. Although writing is writing, each writer has a level of comfort when it comes to the position of their hands and wrists. There are keyboards that focus on different aspects of comfort.
Second, we need functionality!
After keeping comfort in mind a writer wants to be sure that they are looking at a keyboard that will function in a way that allows them to be productive. Each writer has a hand and wrist placement. Just like each batter has a stance in the batter’s box at a baseball game. Each writer has a specific way of placing their hands and wrists to type productively.
If you like the look of the “v” shaped boards you may be intrigued by the Perixx Periboard-612. Personally, I do not like the “v” shaped boards. Microsoft makes a keyboard that has an actual space at the top like a “v”. If that wasn’t enough for the ergonomic keyboard styles, Cloud Nine makes one that actually comes apart!!
Each keyboard has its own features that a writer will either find useful or a waste. The biggest thing is to be sure that you are choosing a keyboard that is along the lines of functionality for your purpose.
Third, we want fun!
Just because we are working doesn’t mean we can’t choose something fun. From colors to lights, keyboards have become fun additions to the desktop.
I wish I would have spent a little more time looking before I decided on the one I purchased. I decided on a Logitech combo with palm rest.
After purchasing my keyboard, I noticed a few that had a vintage look. Part of me wished I would have noticed these first. However, I am not sure of the dependability and the ergonomics of them, so for now, I am satisfied with my choice of the Logitech keyboard.
I have always wanted a vintage typewriter just to tinker with and have as décor. I love the look of the RYMEK Typewriter-style keyboard. The nice vintage look and just all-around appearance is very appealing to me.
Research is vital
At the end of the day, you have to do your research and find the perfect fit for you. I will say that functionality should probably trump looks if you are someone who is hardcore technology. You will also want to ensure that the price is within your budget and worth paying. Using your keyboard daily requires one that will last. Sometimes, the looks take away from the dependability so be sure you are getting what you pay for.
I mention a few keyboards in this blog, but I have not used them. These mentions are based on the appeal factor that caught my eye when I was searching for my new keyboard. Happy keyboarding my friend!!
