The one who works his land will be satisfied with food, but whoever chases daydreams will have his fill of poverty. Proverbs 28:19, NET
Getting ready for the upcoming gardening season can be a tedious job. We want to make sure our soil is rich in nutrients and ready for the seeds we want to plant. This means we have to be sure there are no rocks, weeds, bugs, or anything else that would be detrimental to our green, flower, veggie, and fruit plants.
I am not much of a gardener. I love to partake in the freshness of a home garden, but my thumb is not anywhere near green. I don’t know how to space them or where to place each variety of veggies. I do know that the ground has to be fertile and receptive to the seed in order for it to grow.
Over the years, I have watched my friends produce these amazing gardens and I sit and wish I was as talented in that area. The only way to grow a garden is to plant one. Once it is planted, then it needs to be tended. This is where the garden becomes the garden. It’s not so much about talent as it is discipline.
It takes discipline to check the garden each day and remove the weeds… if possible without killing the plants. It takes persistence to keep it watered and growing. Working in a garden is work. It can be invigorating and pleasing, but nonetheless, it is work.
Our faith is the same way. It is work. It takes dedication and persistence. In order to grow in faith there has to be a desire to “work” the “ground” of our hearts. We have to make sure our heart is in the right condition to receive God’s word. Once we have prepared our hearts, it takes diligence to maintain the right “nutrients” so that it can grow and become something that will produce fruit for the sake of others.
We are to grow fruit to share with those around us who may be in need of hope and grace. We need to be able to produce a love that meets people where they are. This is not an easy fruit to produce. It takes time and total surrender to God’s will in our lives.
Friend, take time to till and tend your faith garden… someone is needing the fruit of hope in the world today.
